Peabody Energy Announces Plans to Reopen Rawhide Mine
PRNewswire
ST. LOUIS

Peabody Energy announced today that it intends to resume operations at its Rawhide Mine in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming. Production is expected to resume at the 8 million-ton-per-year level in the fall of 2001, after obtaining the necessary permit revisions. Peabody is evaluating if it will use a contractor or will operate the mine itself.

The company expects to ship the majority of the mine's production through calendar year 2002 to customers already under contract for its Powder River Basin coals. The reopening of Rawhide allows for greater product diversity and frees up coal from the company's other mines in the region to satisfy increasing customer demand. Peabody's two other Powder River Basin mines, the North Antelope/Rochelle Mine and Caballo Mine, are operating at full capacity.

Peabody Energy is the world's largest private-sector coal company. Its coal fuels more than 9 percent of all U.S. electricity generation and more than 2 percent of worldwide electricity generation.
