ST. LOUIS

Peabody Energy's Wanda Burget has earned the Peck Community Achievement Award for more than two decades of volunteer leadership in the town of Wright and in Campbell County, Wyo.

Burget, a Wyoming native, is manager of environmental engineering for Peabody's operations in the Powder River Basin. She joined the company in 1985 and has served in a variety of roles in environmental permitting and compliance, regulatory affairs, coal quality assurance and safety.

"Wanda exhibits the true spirit of the Peck Achievement Award because she is engaged in a tremendous range of activities aimed at improving our community," said Marion Loomis, executive director for the Wyoming Mining Association, which coordinates the award presentation. "Her activities span decades and are making a difference at multiple levels."

Burget is involved in industry issues on numerous fronts as a member of the Wyoming Mining Association's Regulatory Affairs Committee, the Air Quality Subcommittee and the National Mining Association's Air Quality and Land Committees. She also has participated in numerous forums addressing air quality issues associated through the Western Regional Air Partnership.

Her civic involvement includes participation as a board member of the Campbell County Chamber of Commerce, the Campbell County Library Board and the Wright Housing Commission. She is working to help develop a model school program to minimize adversity among students and is active in the Literacy Volunteer's Spelling Bee. She also serves on the Campbell County coordinating committee for Project Impact, a program sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The Peck Achievement Award commemorates the dedication of Senator Bob Peck and the late Senator Roy Peck and recognizes outstanding community service by a Wyoming miner. The recipient is chosen by a seven-member committee, which includes representation from the legislature, industry and media.

Peabody Energy is the world's largest private-sector coal company. Its coal products fuel more than 9 percent of all U.S. electricity generation and more than 2 percent of worldwide electricity generation.
