The new home of the Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA), which is expected to generate tremendous economic opportunity in Southwestern Illinois, will be located on land that formerly provided economic activity from coal mining.
Through a transaction between the state of Illinois and Peabody Recreational Lands, 1,000 acres of reclaimed lands will be purchased by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and used for the association's headquarters and Hall of Fame. The area, located near Sparta, is the site of Peabody's former River King No. 6 Mine.
"Peabody's innovative reclamation programs restore mined land for higher uses and demonstrate a commitment to excellence in stewardship," said Roger B. Walcott Jr., executive vice president - corporate development. "We're proud to help bring the ATA to this area, which will enhance the region's economic and recreational climate."
Peabody's award-winning reclamation activities return the land to equal or better condition than prior to mining, creating a greener earth and land that is more productive. Last year, Peabody operations reclaimed 3,000 acres of land, planted 870,000 trees, while contributing more than $50 million to an industry fund to restore abandoned mines.
The company also received outstanding national recognition for these activities, including an unprecedented six of 12 awards for reclamation excellence given to the entire mining industry by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
