Peabody Energy announced today that Craig D. Idso has been named director - environmental science, reporting to Vice President - Environment and Technology John M. Wootten.
Idso will be responsible for the application of environmental science to Peabody's activities related to the environmental impacts of coal use and the management of coal combustion emissions and by-products, with an emphasis on carbon sinks, carbon sequestration and energy efficiency. Peabody is a strong proponent of continued improvement in emissions from coal-based generation, development and deployment of clean coal technologies, and advancement of climate change research and carbon sequestration efforts.
Idso most recently served as president and chairman of the Center for the Study of Carbon Dioxide and Global Change, a non-profit science educational organization. He also has served in climate, meteorological and physical geography research and teaching roles at Arizona State University and the University of Nebraska.
Idso graduated magna cum laude from Arizona State with a Ph.D. in geography. He also holds a master's degree in agricultural meteorology from the University of Nebraska and a bachelor's in science from Arizona State.
