Peabody's Rawhide Mine Receives Permit; Will Resume Operations to Meet Growing Powder River Basin Demand

Peabody Energy announced today that it has received permits from the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality to resume operations at its Rawhide Mine in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming. Production is expected to resume by year end, with shipments beginning in the first quarter of 2002.

The highly productive Rawhide operation is being restarted to help meet growing Powder River Basin demand, and provide Peabody's Powder River Basin customers with additional product and transportation flexibility. The majority of the mine's anticipated 8 million ton-per-year production is committed for 2002.

Peabody's two other Powder River Basin operations, the North Antelope/Rochelle Mine and Caballo Mine, are operating at full capacity.
