Peabody Energy Celebrates Arbor Day in Powderly

GRAHAM, Ky.

Peabody Energy celebrated Arbor Day in Kentucky through a contribution to Muhlenberg County. The gift will be used to purchase and plant about 20 10-foot maple trees at the new Senior Citizens Center in Powderly.

"The maples will help beautify the Senior Center and will be enjoyed by residents for years to come," said Kemal Williamson, Midwest Operations group executive. "The gift embodies Peabody's enduring commitment to environmental stewardship and especially to reforestation in Kentucky."

Peabody's commitment to environmental excellence is driven by the company's mission statement, which says that when the mining is complete, we will leave the land in a condition equal to or better than we found it. This mission is turned into reality through an environmental committee headed by the company's president and the actions of a staff of corporate field environmental experts.

In Western Kentucky, award-winning reclamation efforts include restoring tens of thousands of acres and planting more than 59 million trees in the past 50 years. Trees play an important role in the environment by converting carbon dioxide to oxygen during photosynthesis, creating natural carbon sinks.

Each year, Peabody's reclamation efforts are recognized with a number of state, regional and national honors. The company has received six awards for exemplary reclamation at its Kentucky operations in the past three years.

Peabody Energy is the world's largest coal company. Its coal products fuel more than 9 percent of America's electricity and 2 percent of the world's electricity.
