Peabody Energy's Eastern Associated Coal Corp. celebrated Arbor Day by donating a park bench and six trees to Holz Elementary School, a Partners in Education School. The trees are a combination of dogwood, crabapple and maple.

"The gift will help beautify the playground and will be enjoyed by the students for years to come," said Jiri Nemec, group executive for Appalachia Operations. "It illustrates our belief in being good stewards of the land and its resources."

Peabody's commitment to environmental excellence is driven by the company's mission statement, which says that when the mining is complete, we will leave the land in a condition equal to or better than we found it. This mission is turned into reality through an environmental committee headed by the company's president and the actions of a staff of corporate field environmental experts.

Award-winning reclamation efforts include restoring tens of thousands of acres and planting more than 70 million trees nationwide over the past half century. Trees play an important role in the environment by converting carbon dioxide to oxygen during photosynthesis, creating natural carbon sinks. Each year, Peabody's reclamation efforts are recognized with a number of state, regional and national honors, which include nearly 20 awards in the past three years.

Peabody Energy is the world's largest coal company. Its coal products fuel more than 9 percent of America's electricity and 2 percent of the world's electricity.
