Peabody Energy's Powder River Basin operations today celebrated Arbor Day through contributions to the Gillette Trash for Trees Program, the Wright Arbor Day Celebration, and the City of Douglas to purchase trees for the community and area parks.
"These gifts support the planting of trees, a greener community and environmental stewardship, key tenets of Peabody's philosophy for creating valuable, lasting resources," said Powder River Basin Operations Group Executive Ian S. Craig. "Our operations provide low-cost energy for more than 16 million families, while our low sulfur coal results in a cleaner environment."
Peabody's commitment to environmental excellence is driven by the company's mission statement, which says that when the mining is complete, we will leave the land in a condition equal to or better than we found it. This mission is turned into reality through an environmental committee headed by the company's president and the actions of a staff of corporate field environmental experts.
Award-winning reclamation efforts include restoring tens of thousands of acres and planting more than 70 million trees nationwide. Trees play an important role in the environment by converting carbon dioxide to oxygen during photosynthesis, creating natural carbon sinks. Each year, Peabody's reclamation efforts are recognized with a number of state, regional and national honors. The company has received nearly 20 awards in the past three years.
