Haaga Named Operations Manager For Highland Mining Company

Peabody Energy today announced that it has named Matt Haaga operations manager for its Highland Mining Company subsidiary, reporting to Kemal Williamson, group executive for Midwest operations. Haaga is responsible for operations, safety, engineering, and compliance activities for Highland located in Union County, Ky., near Morganfield.

With extensive mining engineering and operations experience, Haaga returns to Peabody after being employed at Black Beauty Coal Co. for the past three years. Haaga previously served in a variety of engineering, operations and senior management roles at Peabody's Midwest and Appalachia operations from 1976 until 1999. He has a mining engineering degree from the University of Kentucky at Lexington.

Highland No. 11 Mine will annually supply 750,000 tons of coal to customers under multi-year sales agreements. Highland No. 11 employs about 70 workers and began shipments in February.

Highland No. 9 Mine is being developed to satisfy an eight-year coal supply agreement with TVA's Cumberland generating station in Tennessee. The mine will ship 4 million tons annually when it reaches full capacity by year- end. It has a projected 20-year life, will employ about 240 workers and is expected to begin production in the fourth quarter. The Highland No. 9 Mine will utilize new technology with 2,300-volt continuous miners and a high capacity flexible conveyor train. Haaga has been instrumental in developing and testing this technology with the vendor over the last couple of years.
