Peabody Energy today announced the purchase of nearly 5,000 net acres of oil, natural gas and coalbed methane rights in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming.

The purchase increases the company's Powder River oil, gas and coal bed methane holdings to more than 40,000 net acres. Peabody also controls 3.1 billion tons of low sulfur coal reserves in the Powder River Basin, the fastest growing coal producing region in America.

Peabody Energy is the world's largest private-sector coal company, with 2001 sales of 194 million tons of coal and $2.7 billion in revenues. Its coal products fuel more than 9 percent of all U.S. electricity generation and more than 2 percent of worldwide electricity generation.
