Peabody Energy today announced that Fred W. Conner has been named director of conservancy. In this role Conner will be responsible for post mine reclamation, compliance and conservancy activities involving Peabody's 300,000-plus acres of surface lands, as well as oversight of the Colony Bay Mine. Conner will be reporting to Vice President - Resource Development and Conservancy Kenneth E. Allen.
Conner will be based at the Colony Bay Mine office near Wharton, W.Va. Conner most recently served as superintendent of Colony Bay and closed mines in West Virginia. He has more than 30 years of mining experience, joining Eastern Gas & Fuel as a co-op student in 1971. Conner has held various operations management positions in Peabody's Appalachian operations, including mine manager, superintendent, general manager and operations manager.
Peabody Energy is the world's largest private-sector coal company, with 2001 sales of 194 million tons of coal and $2.7 billion in revenues. Its coal products fuel more than 9 percent of all U.S. electricity generation and more than 2 percent of worldwide electricity generation.
