Peabody Energy today announced that Paul R. Davis has been named the general manager of the Wilkie Creek Mine in Australia. Davis reports to Group Executive of Powder River Basin Operations Ian S. Craig, who formerly directed the company's Australian operations.

Davis recently served as general manager of the Moura Mine, which was part of the Australian subsidiary that was sold by Peabody in January 2001. Prior to this position, Davis held a number of management positions within Peabody Resources and other Australian mining organizations, including general manager of the Warkworth Mine in New South Wales and the Moura Mine in Queensland. Davis began his career in 1974 as a mining engineer, having graduated from the University of New South Wales with a bachelor of engineering degree in mining.

The August 2002 acquisition of the mine and coal resources from Mirant Corporation marks a return by Peabody to Australia, where the company operated for much of the past decade. The mine is expected to produce 1.3 million metric tonnes per year in 2003. The coal is exported via the Port of Brisbane to fuel electricity generation in Asia.

Peabody Energy is the world's largest private-sector coal company, with 2001 sales of 194 million tons of coal and $2.7 billion in revenues. Its coal products fuel more than 9 percent of all U.S. electricity generation and more than 2 percent of worldwide electricity generation.
