John C. Hill Named Operations Manager of Arclar Company

HARRISBURG, Ill.

Arclar Company today announced that John C. Hill has been named operating manager of the Southern Illinois coal company. Hill will have responsibilities for operations at the Willow Lake underground coal mine, with the adjacent Cottage Grove surface operation continuing to be contract-mined by Black Beauty Coal Company.

Hill is a 26-year veteran of the coal industry, serving in operating and management positions with a number of major coal producers including Peabody Coal Company, Amax Coal Company, R&F Coal Company, Marrowbone Development Company and Shell Mining Company. Most recently, Hill was executive manager of Patriot Coal Company in Henderson, Ky. Hill holds a bachelor's degree in mining engineering from West Virginia University.

Arclar Company, LLC, one of the largest coal companies in Illinois, is owned 75 percent by Black Beauty Coal Company and 25 percent by Peabody Energy . Peabody also owns 81.7 percent of Black Beauty. In addition to the Willow Lake and Cottage Grove mines in Saline County, Ill., Arclar owns more than 50 million tons of coal reserves. Willow Lake and Cottage Grove produce approximately 5 million tons of coal each year that is sold to electric generating customers including TVA and Tampa Electric.
