The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has recognized Peabody Energy's Powder River operations for innovative programs promoting wildlife habitat conservation on Wyoming lands.
The Reclamation and Wildlife Stewardship Award presented by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department recognizes multiple Peabody initiatives that restore wildlife habitat on reclaimed lands at the North Antelope/Rochelle Mine, the nation's largest coal mine.
Key programs include: 1) Reclaiming Porcupine Creek, a two-mile stream channel that included constructing more than 40 wetland features and hand planting more than 3,800 native riparian plants to create a self-sustaining habitat; 2) restoring hardy habitat for elk, deer and pronghorn that included planting more than 5,000 trees and shrubs; and 3) research aimed at improving ways to manage and improve sage grouse habitat. At the North Antelope/Rochelle Mine, lands are typically reclaimed to a condition that is two times more productive than native range.
"Creating improved wildlife habitat and productive rangeland illustrates a commitment to developing valuable, lasting resources," said Ian S. Craig, Powder River operations group executive. "We are proud to be recognized as an industry leader that contributes to continuous environmental improvement."
Peabody's commitment to environmental excellence is driven by the company's mission statement, which says that when mining is complete, the land will be returned to a condition that is equal or better than before mining. This mission is turned into reality through an environmental committee headed by the company's president and the actions of a staff of corporate field environmental experts.
Award-winning reclamation efforts include restoring tens of thousands of acres and planting more than 70 million trees nationwide. Peabody has received 20 awards since 2000 for environmental excellence.
With coal seams up to 100 feet thick, ultra-low sulfur products and superior train loading capabilities, Peabody's North Antelope/Rochelle, Caballo and Rawhide mines in the Powder River Basin provide more than 100 million tons of coal annually to customers. The operations provide low-cost energy for more than 16 million families, using low sulfur coal that results in a cleaner environment.
