Seven Students Awarded Peabody Energy College Scholarships

Peabody Energy announced today that seven students have been selected to receive 2002-2003 college scholarships. The students are sons and daughters of employees of Peabody Energy and its subsidiaries.

The $2,000 per semester, merit-based scholarships are awarded to students who have completed or are completing their first year of college and whose parent is employed by Peabody Energy or its subsidiaries.

Applicants are evaluated by a selection committee on the basis of scholarly ability, citizenship and leadership, and applicability of their degree to the coal mining industry. Scholarship recipients must be classified as full-time students and maintain at least a "B" average.

Recipients are Sara R. Dietrich of St. Louis, Mo., Christopher E. Freeland of Morgantown, W.Va., Jeannette M. Hoy of Fairmont, W.Va.; Daniella M. Olguin of Grants, N.M.; Sabrina N. Peros of Ashford, W.Va., Katharine M. Smith of Gillette, Wyo., and Courtney L. Wendt of Flagstaff, Ariz.

Sara R. Dietrich, the daughter of Thomas and Susan Dietrich of St. Louis, Mo., is a sophomore at the University of Missouri - Columbia, majoring in accounting. Her father is senior counsel for Peabody Energy in St. Louis.

Christopher E. Freeland is a junior at West Virginia University in Morgantown, majoring in accounting. He is the son of Bert and Kathy Matheney of Morgantown, W.Va. Bert is a roof bolter at Federal No. 2 Mine in Fairview, W.Va.

Jeanette M. Hoy is a sophomore majoring in computer and electrical engineering at West Virginia University in Morgantown. She is the daughter of Edward and Sandi Hoy of Fairmont, W.Va. Her father is an engineer at Federal No. 2 Mine.

Daniella M. Olguin is a mechanical engineering major at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, completing her senior year. She is the daughter of Wilfred and Kelly Olguin of Grants, N.M. Wilfred is a technician at Lee Ranch Mine in Grants, N.M.

Sabrina N. Peros is a junior at Marshall University, Huntington, W.Va., majoring in business administration. She is the daughter of John and Dreama Peros of Ashford, W.Va. Her father is an engineer at the Prenter Warehouse.

Katharine M. Smith, the daughter of Michael and Juanita Smith of Gillette, Wyo., is a sophomore majoring in finance at Grove City College, Grove City, Pa. Her father is a maintenance technician at North Antelope Rochelle Mine in Gillette, Wyo.

Courtney L. Wendt, the daughter of Gary and Claire Wendt of Flagstaff, Ariz., is a sophomore majoring in accounting at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Her father is supervisor of environmental affairs at Kayenta Mine in Kayenta, Ariz.
