Peabody Energy's Arizona operations have donated $25,000 to aid flood recovery activities in Tuba City, Chinle and other communities on the Navajo reservation in northeastern Arizona. The contribution was presented to the Grand Canyon Chapter of the American Red Cross, which is providing assistance for 500 flood-related cases, many of which involve multiple families.
"As one of the nation's largest private employers on reservation lands, we recognize the importance of working together throughout the recovery process by providing direct and in-kind support," said Arizona Operations Manager Scott Williams. The mines have provided additional assistance by facilitating grading of community roads that were washed out following the recent heavy rains.
Peabody operates the Black Mesa and Kayenta mines on the Navajo and Hopi reservations that employ about 650 workers and produce more than 13 million tons of coal annually to the Mohave and Navajo Generating Stations. The plants provide low-cost electricity to more than 3.5 million Southwest families.
"We are honored that the Navajo community is permitting us to work with them to help families affected by the flood and appreciate the generous support from Peabody," said Catherine A. Tisdale, chief executive officer for the American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter. "It has been a long relief operation and the needs of those affected are great. Peabody's lead gift has set the benchmark for this disaster relief effort. The contribution is deeply appreciated and will go directly to help those who have lost so much."
Mining on Black Mesa injects nearly $2 million into reservation economies each week in coal and water royalties, taxes, wages and benefits and charitable contributions. The operations provide about 80 percent of the Hopi budget and about 30 percent of the Navajo Nation's general budget.
