Peabody Energy announced today that its North Antelope Rochelle Mine shipped 7,076,658 tons of coal in May 2003 -- a new monthly record for a North American coal mine.

During the month, North Antelope Rochelle Mine loaded 476 trains containing 60,113 cars. The unit trains for the month's shipments, if stretched end-to-end, would extend approximately 625 miles -- equal to the distance from Detroit to New York City.

The strong coal shipments were the result of a strong team effort between the mine, railroads and customers. The coal supplies will aid electricity generators, which are expected to run coal-fueled generating plants at high capacity levels. Coal fuels more than half of America's electricity, and competing generation forms are increasingly limited by cost or supplies.

Peabody Energy is the world's largest private-sector coal company. Its coal products fuel more than 9 percent of all U.S. electricity generation and more than 2 percent of worldwide electricity generation.
