Peabody Energy has been named "Coal Company of the Year" by an international panel of judges at the 2003 Global Energy Awards in New York. The award, which Peabody has earned twice in four years, recognizes leadership in:

  -- Advanced technologies;
  -- Productivity;
  -- Innovative market and technology strategy;
  -- Shareholder value; and
  -- Commercial success.

This international recognition caps a year of top honors for Peabody, which also received four major awards for environmental stewardship and community relations at the U.S. Department of the Interior's 26th Excellence in Surface Coal Mining Reclamation Awards ceremony this fall.

The honors include the first "Gold" Good Neighbor Award for environmental, economic and tribal initiatives on Native American lands in Arizona and the Director's Award for outstanding results reclaiming wetlands in Indiana. Peabody has earned the Director's Award for four consecutive years.

Peabody was also recognized as a Global Energy Award finalist for Energy Company of the Year and CEO of the Year. The Global Energy Awards are presented by Platts and sponsored by Business Week. Each year, a panel of judges comprised of corporate executives, leading academics, senior analysts and editors convene in London to cast their votes.

Peabody Energy is the world's largest private-sector coal company, with 2002 sales of 198 million tons of coal and $2.7 billion in revenues. Its coal products fuel more than 9 percent of all U.S. electricity generation and more than 2 percent of worldwide electricity generation.
