Peabody Energy has been named one of America's "Most Admired Companies" according to Fortune Magazine in its March 8, 2004 edition.

The 2004 "Most Admired" listing is based on surveys of 10,000 business executives, directors and analysts who judge eight attributes: innovation, financial soundness, employee talent, quality of management, use of corporate assets, long-term investment, social responsibility and quality of products/services. Peabody is the only coal company recognized in the listing.

Peabody Energy is the world's largest private-sector coal company, with 2003 sales of 203 million tons and $2.8 billion in revenues. Its coal products fuel approximately 9.8 percent of all U.S. electricity generation and nearly 2.5 percent of worldwide electricity generation.
