Peabody Energy has been named the best coal company in the world by an international panel of judges at the Sixth Annual Global Energy Awards in New York City.

The "Coal Company of the Year" honor was the second in a row for Peabody, which has earned the award three times in the past five years. The award recognizes leadership in productivity, advanced technologies, market strategy, commercial success and shareholder value. The global recognition caps a year of honors, with Peabody operations and affiliates earning seven national industry and state awards for safety and environmental stewardship.

Peabody also was recognized as a Global Energy Awards finalist for Energy Company of the Year and Community Development Program of the Year. The Global Energy Awards is sponsored by Platts, a division of The McGraw-Hill Companies.

Peabody Energy is the world's largest private-sector coal company, with 2003 sales of 203 million tons and $2.8 billion in revenues. Its coal products fuel more than 10 percent of all U.S. electricity generation and more than 2.5 percent of worldwide electricity.
