Peabody Energy's Caballo Mine has earned the Wyoming Engineering Society's Project of the Year Award for innovative design of a facility that improves air quality at the mine's haul truck hopper area. Caballo Mine is owned and operated by Powder River Coal Company, a subsidiary of Peabody Energy.
The Caballo engineering and environmental team was recognized for developing "stilling sheds" that use baffles or curtains to slow the velocity of the air where coal is unloaded into the hopper. The curtains create a calming or "stilling" effect and allow dust to settle within the building before reaching the atmosphere.
In addition to the air quality control benefits, the system was designed to minimize environmental impacts. Recycled conveyor belts were used to create the curtains, and by design, the technology conserves energy. The solution meets Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) requirements, and early DEQ tests show improved air quality and dust control.
"We embrace a culture of continuous improvement to build productivity and drive down costs," said D.L. Lobb, Group Executive for Peabody's Powder River Basin Operations. "We're proud of our team for creating an environmental solution that does both."
