Peabody Energy's Caballo Mine has earned the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality's "Good Neighbor" Award for collaborating with area ranchers to reclaim mined land for hearty rangeland and wildlife habitat, preserving the area's important Western heritage.

Reclaimed lands at Caballo are at least twice as productive for grazing as native range and feature a mix of warm- and cool-season grasses suited for livestock.

Employees were recognized for reclamation techniques that limit soil erosion and for working with ranchers to create a comprehensive grazing management plan for more than 3,300 acres of range.

Because water is a precious commodity in the arid West, mine employees also worked with neighbors to successfully build reservoirs, irrigation pipelines and groundwater wells.

"Being a good neighbor and good steward are core to our mission," said D.L. Lobb, Group Executive for Peabody's Powder River Basin Operations. "We have a long history of working with the local community to maintain Wyoming's proud tradition of ranching and enhance the quality of life here. We work hard to return lands to a condition that is equal to or better than before mining occurred."

The Caballo Mine shipped nearly 33 million tons of coal in 2006 and was among the most productive mines in the United States. Caballo has a history of stewardship and was recognized with the 2007 Project of the Year Award by the Wyoming Engineering Society for the innovative design of a facility that improves air quality at truck hopper areas. Peabody operations consistently achieve the industry's highest honors for sustainability, earning five U.S. Department of the Interior awards in 2006 and more than a dozen overall.

Peabody Energy is the world's largest private-sector coal company, with 2006 sales of 248 million tons of coal and $5.3 billion in revenues. Its coal products fuel approximately 10 percent of all U.S. electricity generation and more than 2 percent of worldwide electricity.
