Peabody Energy today announced that Ken M. Rogers has been honored for innovative practices in stewardship, earning the prestigious Vance "Pat" Wiram Award from the Indiana Society of Mining and Reclamation.

Rogers, a Midwest Region Reclamation Manager with more than 30 years of tenure with Peabody, was recognized for pioneering best practices to restore productive farmland, the highest reclaimed land use. His achievements included reintroducing a blight-resistant American Chestnut on reclaimed lands as part of a broad national partnership to bring back the near extinct species to Eastern U.S. woodlands. Rogers also earned recognition for his leadership as a member of the Indiana Soils/Prime Farmland Team, an organization that provides education about mining.

"Ken and our entire worldwide team of environmental experts have a long history of working to enhance quality of life and leave mined land in a condition equal to or better than we found it."

Throughout his career, Rogers has directed land restoration at Peabody's operations in the Midwest. His honors come on the heels of national recognition from the U.S. Department of the Interior, including a 2007 Excellence in Surface Coal Mining and Reclamation Award for reclamation at Peabody's Gibraltar Mine in Kentucky and the prestigious Director's Award for reforestation in western Kentucky.

Rogers' leadership in reclamation at Peabody's Miller Creek Mine in Indiana was also honored by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, which awarded Miller Creek the 2007 Excellence in Mining and Reclamation Award.

Peabody affiliates won 10 awards for stewardship and sustainability in 2007, including five major national Good Neighbor and Excellence in Reclamation awards from the U.S. Department of the Interior.
