Peabody Energy's Caballo Mine today shipped its 500 millionth ton of coal, which is making the journey by rail to Cook Coal Terminal in Illinois. It travels from there by barge to American Electric Power Company's Rockport Generating Station in Rockport, Ind.

Rockport Station receives approximately 2.5 million tons of Caballo's coal annually, joining nearly a dozen coal-based utilities that use the mine's product to deliver affordable energy to millions of households and businesses throughout the United States. The Caballo Mine is operated by Peabody's Powder River Coal, LLC subsidiary.

Caballo Mine, located in Campbell County, Wyo., opened in 1978, and began shipping coal to American Electric Power in 1979. Caballo's 460 employees last year shipped 31 million tons of coal. Peabody is the largest coal producer in the Powder River Basin, with 2007 sales of nearly 140 million tons.

"Caballo's 500 millionth ton is a significant accomplishment at a time when demand is reaching record highs," said Kemal Williamson, Group Vice President for Western Operations. "I congratulate the Caballo team for marking this important milestone with an important long-term customer and for continuing to operate safely and productively every day."

Caballo is capable of loading up to nine trains per day into Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific trains.

Peabody Energy is the world's largest private-sector coal company, with 2007 sales of 238 million tons and $4.6 billion in revenues. Its coal products fuel approximately 10 percent of all U.S. electricity generation and 2 percent of worldwide electricity.
