Peabody Energy Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Gregory H. Boyce has been named "2008 Global Business Person of the Year" by the World Trade Center Saint Louis. The award recognizes individuals who demonstrate extraordinary vision, leadership and success in international areas.

Boyce was honored for his advancement of Peabody Energy as the global leader in clean coal solutions. He is leading signature projects to commercialize near-zero emissions technology around the world, and has transformed Peabody's global platform, enabling the company to develop a leadership presence in Australia and expanding international coal trading activities around the world. Under Boyce's leadership, Peabody is driving development of coal-fueled baseload generation and Btu Conversion projects.

"Greg's wide experience in global energy markets and his forceful advocacy for clean coal have helped to place St. Louis on the global energy map," said World Trade Center St. Louis Executive Director Tim Nowak. "Under his stewardship, Peabody Energy is advancing energy security, economic growth and environmental solutions."

"It is an honor to be named 2008 Global Business Person of the Year," said Boyce. "And it is a great time to be the world's largest coal company. Coal is the fastest-growing fuel in the world, and it is the only large-scale fuel capable of sustaining the world's growing energy needs."

Trained as a mining engineer, Boyce is a 31-year industry veteran and has been called "coal's strongest evangelist" by The New York Times. He joined Peabody as President and Chief Operating Officer in 2003 and under his leadership Peabody has attained record revenues, earnings, and share performance, ranking among the very best companies in America for shareholder return. Peabody also has marked the three safest years in its history.

The "2008 Global Business Person of the Year" award takes its place alongside more than 40 safety, environmental and corporate honors Peabody has received in the past year. This year, Peabody also is ranked number-one in Fortune's listing of Most Admired Companies in America for the Mining and Crude Oil segment.

Peabody Energy is the world's largest private-sector coal company, with 2007 sales of 238 million tons of coal and $4.6 billion in revenues. Its coal products fuel approximately 10 percent of all U.S. electricity generation and 2 percent of worldwide electricity.
