Peabody Energy Appoints Robert A. Malone to Board of Directors

Peabody Energy today announced that Robert A. Malone has been appointed to Peabody's board of directors and will serve on the board's Audit and Compensation Committees. Malone is a 35-year energy and mining industry executive and is past Chairman and President of BP America Inc., the largest U.S. producer of oil and natural gas.

"Bob has extensive knowledge of U.S. and global energy markets with particular focus on China, India and Indonesia," said Peabody Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Gregory H. Boyce. "He will be a major asset to our board as Peabody continues to pursue strategic growth opportunities in high-margin Pacific Rim markets."

Malone has broad experience in U.S. and international management, operations and engineering. He was an Executive Vice President of BP p.l.c., the world's second-largest oil and natural gas company, was a member of BP's executive management team and was Chief Executive of BP Shipping Limited, responsible for operating the energy industry's largest global oil and natural gas fleet.

He held a series of senior positions with Kennecott Copper Corp., the Standard Oil Company of Ohio and BP, including serving as President, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer of Alyeska Pipeline Services Company, which operated the Trans Alaska Oil Pipeline.

Raised in the Northeast Texas community of Daingerfield, Malone has a Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso, and was an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received a Master of Science in Management. He was named Distinguished Alumni of the Year by the University of Texas at El Paso in 2003.

Malone is a director of the Halliburton Company and First National Bank of Sonora. He has also served as a founding board member for the California Climate Action Registry and the Alaska Children's Trust, positions that are appointed by the Governors of each state. He also was a member of the Board of Regents for the University of Alaska system.

Malone served on the board of trustees for the National Urban League, the Foreign Policy Association, the Pacific Council and the National Petroleum Council. He was a member of the executive committee and board of directors for the American Petroleum Institute, and was a member of the Business Roundtable.

Peabody Energy is the world's largest private-sector coal company, with 2008 sales of 256 million tons and $6.6 billion in revenues. Its coal products fuel 10 percent of all U.S. electricity generation and 2 percent of worldwide electricity.
