ST. LOUIS, March 4, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU) announced today that Michael J. Flannigan has been named Senior Vice President, Global Government Affairs, effective immediately.  Flannigan will have responsibility for all aspects of the company’s international, federal and state government affairs.  He has more than 25 years of experience in public policy, external relations and project development.  Flannigan will report to President and CEO-elect Glenn Kellow.

Flannigan succeeds Fredrick D. Palmer, currently Senior Vice President, Government Relations, who has been named Special Advisor to the Office of the Executive Chairman.

Most recently Flannigan served as Vice President of Global Government Advocacy Outreach for Peabody where he was responsible for the policy and political aspects of Global Advocacy activities.  Prior to that, he served as Peabody’s Vice President of International Government Relations.  Flannigan previously served in multiple government relations and public affairs roles for Rio Tinto, including Global Practice Leader of Government and Corporate Relations.  He also served as Senior Policy Advisor for the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, Legislative Assistant to U.S. Sen. Frank H. Murkowski and Special Assistant to U.S. Sen. J. Bennett Johnston. He holds a Master of Policy Management degree from Georgetown University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in political science at the University of Oregon.
