“Today’s actions make great strides toward repealing onerous regulations that damage the ability of American consumers and industry to access reliable, affordable electricity,” said Peabody President and Chief Executive Officer Glenn Kellow. “We believe a technology path is a better alternative to achieve energy, economic and environmental objectives.”
Background
These actions follow an early 2016 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to stay implementation of onerous rules that would have raised U.S. power costs and damaged reliability of the electric grid with no significant benefit. Peabody had joined with other industry participants and attorneys general from dozens of states to contest the legality of the proposed regulations.
In its first 100 days, the Administration is taking sweeping and bold steps to deliver on its promise to support low-cost energy and protect jobs. Peabody’s approach is also grounded in an all-of-the-above energy strategy, with coal’s benefits reflected in its track record of affordability, scalability, reliability and security of supply. Peabody believes that technology is the best path toward reducing emissions, with high-efficiency low emissions (HELE) technologies available for deployment today and further development of carbon capture use and storage technologies over time.
